Being sick and getting better ๐Ÿคง

Jul 13, 2025 Ian & ์ง€ํ˜œ

After battling a little cold, we thought it would be a good idea to chat about language surrounding being sick, hospitals, medicine, and so on! Once you're in Korea, getting the medicine and attention that you need is critical and hopefully this helps you get better faster.

Symptoms (์ฆ์ƒ) ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

One of the first things that's needed is actually saying that something hurts or feels bad. The key word here is: ์•„ํ”„๋‹ค (to hurt).ย

What's wrong? How to say it in Korean
Headache๋จธ๋ฆฌ๊ฐ€ (head) ์•„ํŒŒ์š” (hurts)
Sore throat๋ชฉ์ด (throat) ์•„ํŒŒ์š”
Stomachache๋ฐฐ๊ฐ€ (stomach) ์•„ํŒŒ์š”
Toothache์ด๊ฐ€ (tooth) ์•„ํŒŒ์š”
Backacheํ—ˆ๋ฆฌ๊ฐ€ (back) ์•„ํŒŒ์š”

By just being able to say that something hurts, this should be a good start for getting treated. After that, though, it would be useful to be more specific about what you're feeling or what's going on. Let's look at some common symptoms for a cold or flu:

SymptomHow to say it in Korean
Coughing๊ธฐ์นจํ•ด์š” / ๊ธฐ์นจ์ด (cough) ๋‚˜์š” (to come out, appear)
Runny nose์ฝง(nose)๋ฌผ(water)์ด ๋‚˜์š”
Stuffy nose์ฝ”๊ฐ€ (nose) ๋ง‰ํ˜€์š” (clogged)
I have a fever์—ด์ด (fever) ์žˆ์–ด์š” (exist, have)
I feel chills์˜คํ•œ์ด (chills) ๋‚˜์š”

Hospital Departments (๋ณ‘์›๊ณผ) ๐Ÿฅ

At this point you can go see a doctor to help get some medication for what's wrong. Depending upon your symptoms, it'll determine which doctor or department would be best.ย

Here are a few departments (๊ณผ) that tend to cover most of what you need:

๋‚ด(internal)๊ณผ = internal medicine

์™ธ(outside)๊ณผ = general surgery

์†Œ์•„(kids)๊ณผ = pediatrics

์น˜(teeth)๊ณผ = dentist

์•ˆ(eye, Sino-Korean)๊ณผ = ophthalmology

์ด(ear, Sino-Korean)๋น„(nose, Sino-Korean)์ธํ›„(throat, Sino-Korean)๊ณผ = ENT (ear, nose, & throat)

ํ”ผ๋ถ€(skin)๊ณผ = dermatology

Medicine (์•ฝ) ๐Ÿ’Š

After visiting the doctor, they'll give you a prescription to some medicine. Once you head on over to the pharmacy (์•ฝ๊ตญ), you'll get which medicine is right for you. Below are just a few of the types of medicine that you're likely to see when you go.ย

๊ฐ๊ธฐ(cold)์•ฝ= cold medicine

๋‘ํ†ต์•ฝ = headache medicine

๊ธฐ์นจ์•ฝ = cough medicine

์„ค์‚ฌ์•ฝ = diarrhea medicine

๋ฉ€๋ฏธ์•ฝ = motion sickness medicine

์•Œ๋ ˆ๋ฅด๊ธฐ์•ฝ = allergy medicine

์†Œํ™”์ œ = digestive aid

In addition, each of these medicines can be given in a variety of forms, but most likely one of the following three forms:

๋ฌผ(water)์•ฝ = syrup (the really bad tasting kind)

์•Œ(egg, ball)์•ฝ = tablets

๊ฐ€๋ฃจ(powder)์•ฝ = powdered medicine (๊ฐ€๋ฃจ, like ๊ณ ์ถ”๊ฐ€๋ฃจ (red pepper powder))

Bonus! ๐ŸŽ

Sort of related to medicine, but is a common proverb is:

๋ณ‘์ฃผ๊ณ  ์•ฝ์ฃผ๊ณ  = to give sickness and the cure

This is usually used in the context of something or someone doing something bad to you, then pretending to help. For instance, if your partner playfully hits you a little too hard, then immediately tends to you afterwards, it's totally natural to say:

"์•ผ! ๋„ˆ๋Š” ์ง„์งœ ๋ณ‘ ์ฃผ๊ณ  ์•ฝ ์ฃผ๊ณ ! ์•„์ด๊ณ ...."ย
